Mattia and Yuri Mengoni from Santarcangelo participated in La Corrida, hosted by Amadeus, reaching the final
The ancient culture of Romagna celebrated and showcased nationwide 'with a snap of the fingers'. Or rather, with a crack of the whip. The credit goes to Mattia and Yuri Mengoni , the two brothers from Santarcangelo di Romagna who, last Wednesday, won the first episode of La Corrida , the historic television program now hosted by Amadeus and broadcast on Nove, earning a direct pass to the final on December 17. What enchanted the audience and allowed them to lift the trophy was their brilliant performance with the 'frusta romagnola', a particular traditional dance that involves the use of this instrument, once essential for the work of farmers who, with its crack, guided the oxen that had to plow the fields. Today, its crack must instead be in time with the polka, as demonstrated by the choreography of Mattia and Yuri Mengoni on the stage of Amadeus' program.
Dancing brothers Mattia and Yuri Mengoni: "Our videos have millions of views."Theirs is a family passion, starting with Mattia, who after many years of dancing folk and Caribbean dances, is now also a master of the Romagna whip, and reaching Yuri, who decided to follow in his older brother's footsteps, even becoming an Italian champion. The experience at La Corrida "came about our videos, which have garnered millions of views on social media," explain the two Santarcangelo natives. "They contacted us to ask us to audition, and we accepted, also because it's a program we've been following for years. It was thrilling to see the audience on their feet for us; the adrenaline was so high."
The Mengoni brothers: "The Romagna whip tradition, broadcast live nationwide."But what most drove them to accept , and still drives them, is "the desire to uphold the Romagna tradition and showcase it nationally, because the Romagna whip is rarely promoted, it's not talked about, and consequently, almost no one knows about it." With more than a month to go until the final of the television show, their goals for the future are many, but Mattia and Yuri are already ready to face the challenge live on national television and give it their all, even if "we still don't know whether we'll bring the same piece or have to create a new one for the occasion. We don't even know our opponents, but we're very relaxed."
The goal is not to win but to have funOne thing's for sure: "We're not particularly interested in competition. Our goal is to have fun and show the Italian public what we do, hoping to attract more and more enthusiasts to this beautiful and demanding discipline."
